In 1997 the U.S. Army adopted the Aimpoint Comp M electronic reflex sight for the M16A2E4 rifle and M4 carbine series. It was subsequently succeeded by the Aimpoint Comp M XD and new Comp M2, which features a better finish and longer battery life. Besides being a favorite of the military, it has become popular in civilian and law enforcement circles.
The best way to attach an Aimpoint Comp M XD or Comp M2 to the M16/AR15 flat top is by means of the GG&G standard Aimpoint ring, which was designed to maximize the Aimpoint's tactical features. Manufactured from 6061 T6 billet aluminum and black hard-coat anodized, this ring is attached to the base by using a squeeze rail design incorporating a single elliptical thumbnut. There is also a square locking cross bar for recoil control. The ring body has a built-in insulated spare battery compartment with a spare Aimpoint battery cap. This is an important feature and it's located on the side of the ring for easy access. This ring is extra wide so that only one is required. To clear the M16/AR15 front sight, the low-profile standard GG&G Comp M ring must be mounted on the GG&G Scout length FIRE system rail.
